Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker, born on December 12, 1863, whose work is best known for its emotional intensity and exploration of psychological themes. This is a lithograph of his most famous painting "The Scream" from 1895, which captures the essence of modern existential angst and has become an iconic image in art history. Munch's style, often associated with Expressionism, was influenced by his personal experiences with illness, death, and mental distress within his family, which he described as "the black angels that kept watch over my cradle." Throughout his career, he produced a vast body of work that included paintings, lithographs, etchings, and woodcuts, communicating his inner turmoil and reflecting on themes such as love, fear, death, and melancholy. Munch never married, referring to his paintings as his children, and he remained in Norway for much of his life, passing away on January 23, 1944, at his estate near Oslo.
