Founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, by architect Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus was an influential modernist art and design school that aimed to fuse fine arts, crafts, and technology. Operating under the principle that "form follows function," the Bauhaus sought to create designs that were simultaneously practical and aesthetically pleasing. Though its life was short-lived, closing in 1933 due to political pressure from the Nazis, the Bauhaus left an indelible mark on 20th-century design, architecture, and art. Its curriculum and philosophy emphasized the integration of theory and praxis, and it produced notable figures like Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Bauhaus principles continue to influence modernist architecture, graphic design, interior design, and typography today.
