Utagawa Hirokage, also known as Ichiyūsai Hirokage, was a Japanese designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, active from about 1855 to 1865. He was a pupil of Utagawa Hiroshige I, a prominent figure in the ukiyo-e art movement. Hirokage is best known for his comical series "Comical Views of Famous Places in Edo" (Edo Meisho Doke Zukushi), which comprises fifty prints when complete. His reputation is also based on his 1859 triptych "Aomono sakana gunzei daikassen no zu" (The Great Battle between the Fruits and Vegetables and the Fish). Despite his relatively short career, Hirokage's work is celebrated for its humor and unique perspective on everyday life in Edo period Japan.
