The history of Zodiacs are deeply rooted in ancient cultures, with the earliest evidence of astrology dating back to the 3rd millennium BC among West Eurasian peoples. Astrology was initially used to predict seasonal shifts and interpret celestial cycles. The familiar zodiac signs known today were developed during the Ancient Greek period, around the time Alexander the Great conquered Egypt. The Greeks, with their deep understanding of mathematics and logic, worked out many of the rules for divination. The astronomer Ptolemy played a significant role in popularizing these 12 signs through his work, the Tetrabiblos. Ptolemy divided the Earth’s orbit around the sun into 12 distinct 30-degree sectors, each associated with a different constellation, leading to the creation of the zodiac signs.
