Amanda Almira Newton was a distinguished botanical illustrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), renowned for her specialization in watercolors of fruit. Her contributions include over 1200 watercolor paintings, making her one of the most prolific artists in the USDA's Pomological Watercolor Collection. This collection, consisting of around 7600 paintings, contains a significant portion—about one-sixth—attributed to Newton's skilled hand. In addition to her watercolor work, Newton also crafted more than 300 wax fruit models, showcasing her versatility and commitment to accurately depicting various fruit species. Her artistic legacy, particularly in the realm of botanical illustration, remains a valuable resource for understanding the diversity and characteristics of fruit.
