Jan Pieter Veth (1864-1925) was a Dutch painter, poet, art critic, and university lecturer, known for his multifaceted contributions to the arts. Born in Dordrecht, he is particularly noted for his work as a portrait painter, with subjects including Max Liebermann, Lambertus Zijl, Frank van der Goes, Antoon Derkinderen, and other contemporaries. Veth's work is characterized by its attention to detail and his ability to capture the personality and essence of his subjects. In addition to his painting, Veth was also a respected art critic and university lecturer, known for his skepticism about aesthetic judgments by art historians and archivists. Despite his death in 1925, Veth's influence on Dutch art and art criticism continues to be recognized.
