About the Artist
Product Details

Sō Shizan (1733-1805), also known as Kusumoto Hakkei, was a Japanese artist who was the adopted son of the Edo master Sō Shiseki. Shiseki, who had moved to Nagasaki, was well-known for his artistic contributions, and Shizan followed in his footsteps. Shizan's work is part of the artistic lineage that continued the traditions of the Edo period, and his connection to Nagasaki suggests an exposure to the cultural and artistic influences that were present in this cosmopolitan port city. Although there is limited information of Sō Shizan's life apart from his work, his role in the continuation of Edo period art is widely acknowledged.
