Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, born in Urbino, Italy in 1483. His work is celebrated for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal. Raphael is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome. Despite his early death at the age of 37 in 1520, Raphael left a significant body of work. His influence on art has been immense, and for centuries he has been recognized as the supreme High Renaissance painter, more versatile than Michelangelo and more prolific than their older contemporary Leonardo.
