Charles Henry Dessalines d'Orbigny, a French botanist and geologist born in 1806, was notable for his specialization in France's Tertiary period and for his work at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. He classified many flowering plant species collected by his brother, Alcide d'Orbigny, from South America. Charles' most significant work was overseeing the "Dictionnaire Universel d’Histoire Naturelle," a comprehensive illustrated encyclopedia of natural history published in 1849. This encyclopedia, known for its 288 hand-colored engravings, is a key resource in botany and geology. His contributions to paleontology also greatly advanced the understanding of Earth's history. Charles d'Orbigny passed away in 1876 in Paris, leaving a lasting impact in the scientific world
