James Bolton (1735-1799) was an English naturalist, botanist, mycologist, and illustrator, known for his contributions to the study of natural history. Born near Warley, he was self-taught and developed a reputation as a skilled botanical illustrator, with his work described as some of the finest from the north of England. Bolton's illustrations, often watercolors on vellum or laid paper, were characterized by their attention to detail and vibrant colors. He also made significant contributions to mycology, the study of fungi, and botany. Despite the challenges of being largely self-taught, Bolton's work has had a lasting impact on the fields of botany and mycology.
